It’s a known fact that Hollywood actresses have to follow almost impossible standards of female beauty in order to be successful. However, recently, more male representatives of the entertainment industry become victims of body shaming. Here are the most famous examples:
In one of his recent interviews, the star of “The Hunger Games” and “Me Before You” movies, Sam Claflin, admitted that he had to work hard in order to meet the requirements of producers, who seek for athletic and muscular actors: “I get really worked up to the point where I spend hours and hours in the gym and not eating for weeks to achieve what I think they're going for”.
The star of “Stranger Things” TV series, David Harbour, shared how he went for an audition for the role of the Blob in one of “Wolverine” movies and was body shamed: “I just made a stupid joke and then they called me and the director, we met at like a hotel, and he was like, ‘David, look, you’re wonderful, we really think you’re just a great actor, we’re just concerned… we’re really concerned. I was like, ‘Why, what’s your concern? I’m good to go. I’m available, let’s do this!’ And they were like, ‘no, it’s just, you lifted up your shirt and we saw the… we’re just a little worried about your health. I was like, ‘Wait a minute, dude, pause for one second. You are telling me I’m too fat to play The Blob? That’s awesome, I have to get the f— back to New York.’ That’s my audition — so I didn’t get The Blob”.
Even Vin Diesel, who is known for his muscular body, became a victim of body shaming. In 2015, the Internet was full of the actor’s photos from vacations and the social media users competed in making “witty” jokes about his “dad bod”. The actor commented that: “I feel sorry for people who have to cut other people down to feel better about themselves. They do it for profit too and that's the dark side of fame”.
In 2014, Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted on a beach with his girlfriend. The actor’s fans as well as the respectable media started to criticize Leo for excess weight and the absence of press cubes. Of course, the actor didn’t worry about those talks and soon started to work on his role in “The Revenant”, for which he got the Academy Award in 2016.
In 1980s, Val Kilmer was a star and managed to work with many famous colleagues. But later, the actor faced problems in both career and personal life. He fought with cancer for a long period of time and that influenced his look. In 2014, Kilmer made jokes about the double standards in Hollywood: “Can't win in this crazy town. Too heavy for too many years and now gossip says, too thin”. At that moment, Kilmer lost much weight for the role of Mark Twain.
Wentworth Miller, known for his roles in “Prison Break” and “Legends of Tomorrow” TV series, had to pass through many hardships before his coming out in 2010. The actor kept secret his sexual orientation and in order to cope with depression, he ate a lot. Clearly, it led to the appearance of excess weight. The actor recollects those times: “In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to. Count on to get me through. There were stretches when the highlight of my week was a favorite meal and a new episode of TOP CHEF. Sometimes that was enough. Had to be. And I put on weight. Big f--king deal”.
